                   Dermatologist In a Jar

Among the latest trends in anti aging "boutique" skin care are what I like to call "dermatologist in a jar" products - anti aging skin care that is developed specifically by noted dermatologists to meet their exacting standards.

While many doctors routinely offer products under their own label to their patients, oftentimes these are what is known in the industry as "generics"  - private label anti aging skin care and cosmetics that can be  pretty much the same from doctor to doctor, only the label is different.

But the new breed of "doctor creams" are something quite different - anti aging products that  frequently contain  ultra premium ingredients, and in many cases  tout the latest  cutting edge skin technologies. Whether they can or can't accomplish more than a mass market or even boutique product is a a subject of great debate - particularly among dermatologists.

That said, most of the top products have a legion of followers that often include some of Hollywood's most celebrated beauties - so clearly, they are doing something right.  Although these products  can be pricey - often costing upwards of $75 for a single cream , and sometimes running into the hundreds of dollars per treatment, for those adventurous souls with a little cash to burn, here's the latest buzz on what to try.

Doctor's Dermatologic Formula -
Developed by New York City dermatologist Dr. Howard Sobel , clearly,  Park Avenue meets Hollywood in this line. According to Allure Magazine, fans  include Jennifer Aniston, Madonna,  Edie Falco, Debra Messing and Catherine-Zeta Jones.  The line is based on proven ingredients such as retinol, vitamins and herbs, but the "secret" is said to lie in a compilation of 17 amino acids which direct cells to produce collagen. Among the hottest products in the line: Wrinkle Relax a peptide based product that combines both the Botox-like effects of  actyl hexapeptide-3 and the collagen producing effects of palimitoyl pentapeptide-3 . It promises noticeably visible results in 15 days with a 50% decrease in lines in wrinkles in 45 to 60 days. Maximum effects show up in 60 to 90 days. But for this you pay a steep price - $75 for a half ounce.

Murad
This line was created by noted Los Angeles dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. Among the first to preach the powers of topical anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients for the skin, he is also a strong proponent of "beauty vitamins" - nutrients taken internally to boost skin's appearance. One  signature ingredient in both creams and supplements  is "pomegranate"  -yes the fruit . Others  include glucasamine and amino acids, which, the company claims, reduces wrinkles by up to 34% and increases elasticity by up to 18%. Dr. Murad's  fan base includes stars like Calista Flockhart, Thandie Newton and Cheryl Tiegs.  The lowest price dermatologist line, prices start  at about $35.

N.V. Perricone
Developed by the now truly famous Dr. Nicholas Perricone,  the signature ingredient in these products is alpha lipoic acid or ALA - a type of antioxidant which he  believes is intrinsic to healthy, youthful skin.  This, along with DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol)  which, he says, will firm the skin, offers what some describe as an "instant face lift" without the surgery!  His formulations are patented, and while it's illegal to claim a product "cures" wrinkles, (and there's lots of controversy surrounding his product claims )  legions of his fans swear these  products do just that.  Included among his followers are Julia Roberts, Kim Cattrall and Heidi Klum - who you've got to admit look pretty spectacular.  The key product in the Perricone line is Face Firming Activator, which is said to target sagging, drooping skin along with puffiness and dark circles under the eye - but it doesn't come cheap. Two ounces will set you back about $100.

Re Vive
Created by University of Louisville dermatologist Dr. Gregory Bays Brown, the key to this product line lies in a growth factor found in saliva that helps animals heal wounds. (Ever watch a puppy or kitten "lick their bruised paws"? ) Sounds icky, I know, but the development of a synthetic version of the key chemical  epidermal growth factor (EGF) led to the development of the Re Vive line of anti-aging skin care products.  His fan base includes Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Drea de Matteo - and probably lots more by now since his products are routinely packaged into all those Academy Award goody bags the stars get.  Among the most expensive product lines on the market, a two ounce jar of Re Vives Intensite sells for about $375. (Or, you could just have your puppy lick your face for free!)

·Erno Lazlo
A Hungarian dermatologist, Dr. Erno Lazlo passed away in 1973 at the age of 82. His line of legendary products lives on, however, with followers that included Greta Garbo, Jacquiline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe.  His new fan base includes beauties like Nicole Kidman, Madonna (again) and surprisingly, some Hollywood hunks like Brad Pitt.  The signature ingredient here is  "chaulmoogra oil" , garnered from trees in India. Clearly not a cutting edge formula, those who use it swear by it's skin softening properties.  Newer innovations also add an 8 percent concentration of glycolic acid , as well as salicylic acid and marine collagen - all of which is said to work together to reduce lines by 51%, roughness by 33% and blotchiness by 72%.  Prices start at $75 for a half ounce.

Dr. Brandt
The label bears the name "Dr Brandt" on  all products, but  there are actually six different lines in all  - and all created by noted Miami/Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Fredric Brandt. According to Allure magazine he claims to be the " largest user of injectable collagen and Botox in the world" - which actually makes you wonder why he's even bothering with topical skin creams. None the less he does, and his products are close to cult status in terms of followers - which include such beauties as Cher, Hallie Berry and once again Madonna (does she use everything?) . Among his  most popular products are  the "Lineless " collection, which utilize a proprietary blend of green tea, grape seed and other botanical extracts which he says provide anti-aging benefits.  A three month supply of cream costs about $100, with toners and cleansers about $40 each, and eye creams and serums another $100 each.  His "Poreless" line is slightly less expensive, and combines salicylic acid with tea tree oil, rosemary and other botanicals to increase cell turnover. A three month supply of the Poreless cream is about $55.
